North Dakota Opportunity Loan approved for Souris Valley Animal Shelter

Over the last 40 years, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter has helped approximately 35,000 animals in eleven North Dakota counties within a 75-mile radius of Minot.

The shelter is overseen by the Souris Valley Humane Society. It employs nine full- and part-time staff and takes in, on average, 75 animals per month.

Like all animal shelters, the facility operates on a fixed budget, is dependent on the assistance and generosity of volunteers, and is constantly busy in meeting ever-increasing demands. This demand, coupled with age, has taken a significant toll on its facility.

The shelter no longer meets current standards for animal care. It is plagued with a number of structural problems, most notably an out-of-date HVAC system, lack of natural light, and spacing limitations that don’t allow for quarantining ill animals.

In desperate need for building updates and expansion, the shelter was recently was approved for a loan through the North Dakota Opportunity Fund to construct an addition to its existing shelter. The North Dakota Opportunity Fund is participating in this project with the lead lender, Bremer Bank of Minot and Souris Basin Planning Council.

The loan complements on-going fundraising efforts for the project.

The North Dakota Opportunity Fund leverages private financing to help small businesses and manufacturers attain loans and investments for expansion. The loan for the Souris Valley Animal Shelter is very much in line with this purpose.

“The shelter is providing a little-appreciated critical service to the area. It enjoys deep support in the community for what it does. This loan complements the funds that have already been raised and moves the vision several steps closer to becoming a reality,” says Matt Burthold, LCD Group commercial lending director.
