Dustin Buth had been in the cleaning and restoration business in Williston for 16 years. While the work was satisfying, he found himself wanting to go in a different direction, doing something else he admits is “totally different.” Long interested in the growing recreational industry, Buth decided to finally take the leap into starting a new business. It was at that point Bud’s R&R was born.
Bud’s R&R will specialize in selling outdoor recreational and hobby products. The business will sell ‘Evolution’ brand golf carts along with ‘Louisiana Grills’ brand pellet meat smokers and related accessaries.
Buth has done his homework. His business plan is solid with two-year projections based on demand, the regional market, a knowledgeable and experienced sales and support staff, and a gorilla-style advertising strategy. Buth knows what he needs in online sales and showroom traffic. And when it came to securing a location for his showroom, Lewis & Clark Development Group’s help made a difference.
Working with Buth’s lender, Gate City Bank, the North Dakota Opportunity Fund recently approved a loan for the portion of the financing for Buth to purchase a new store building located at 621-633 East Broadway in Williston. Bud’s R&R will occupy the majority of the property’s space with the remaining area set to be leased to other business tenants.
“I was fortunate to find a building in a good area with busy traffic. The financing package allows me to buy the building and have operating capital. This would not be the case without the North Dakota Opportunity Fund,” says Buth. “Lewis and Clark Development Group made the financing package a reality.”
Buth also wants Bud’s R&R to meet a persistent need in the Williston area for small engine repair services. In addition to serving the products his business will sell, Buth plans to have technicians repair all types of golf carts, snow blowers, lawn mowers, and other small engines.
Work is underway on the showroom and converting the property. Inventory, however, is Buth’s biggest challenge. As the economy reemerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain back-ups are impacting almost every retail business.
“Normally, financing is a start-up’s biggest challenge. The North Dakota Opportunity Fund helped me overcome that hurdle. Right now, it is inventory. Of course, I’m not the only one. Every business owner I know is dealing with this. It’ll work itself out of the system and once it does, we’ll be ready to go,” says Buth.
